Disposing of your vehicle
Disposing of your vehicle at the end of its life is no longer just a matter of dropping it off at your nearest scrap yard or just letting somebody take it away.
The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) must be properly notified of its disposal.
DVLA now has the authority to carry out enforcement action against the registered keeper directly from information held on the vehicle licence records. Under this new system if you are still listed as the registered keeper with DVLA all offenses involving the vehicle will be your responsibility.
There is a simple way to make sure this does not happen to you.
Just deliver your End of Life Vehicle to an Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF) permitted by the Environment Agencies.
The ATF receiving your vehicle will issue you with a Certificate of Destruction which ends your responisibility for the vehicle from its date of issue. FMS Recovery is required to be registered as an ATF and offer this service.
Disposing of your vehicle to FMS Recovery means that you can get your Certficate of Destruction but also that your vehicle will be de-polluted and recycled to the highest possible standard. Protecting you and protecting the environment.
Depollution Process
The first stage is to remove the battery in order to eliminate the risk of a spark. The vehicle will then be taken to the depollution area. Specialist equipment is used to drain the hazardous fluids found on the vehicle, including:
- Engine oil
- Transmission fluid
- Windscreen washer fluid
- Engine coolant
- Power steering fluid
- Brake fluid
- Shock absorber fluid
- Fuel
Oil filters are removed and drained. If the vehicle is fitted with air conditioning, the refrigrant is drained. The wheels are removed and the tyres are separated. Once the depollution process has been completed the vehicle can be further processed at a shredder.
Tyres
Around 50 million waste tyres are prodiced each year of which approximately 70,000 tonnes originate from end of life vehicles.
There are already a number of alternatives in operation, ranging from the incineration of tyres in cement kilns and for energy recovery, the re-sale of part worn or retreaded tyres to the use of tyres in sports surfaces and road constructions and children's play areas.
We process the local authority scrap, waste, and dumped tyres in order for them to meet their recycling targets.
Domestic Appliances
FMS Recovery specialise in the disposal of cookers, washing machines, most white goods, IT equipment, as well as all metals.
Please note: We are currently not able to dispose of refrigerators.
Domestic Clearance
In today's society white goods, the larger electrical and electronic goods, as well as IT equipment are ubiquitous. Generally speaking their lives are finite and improved versions are released frequently. As a result they are replaced regularly and that means that a lot of waste is generated. Unfortunately much electrical waste can be dangerous if it is indirectly released into the environment. Normally they contain substantial amounts of metals, which are toxic in varying degrees.
WEEE Recycling
The UK WEEE regulations came into effect on 1st July 2007, and require retailers and producers to support the recycling of UK Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE). Under the regulations, a producer is defined as a company that manufacturers, imports, or rebrands electrical and electronic good for sale or hire in the UK.
FMS Recovery is a licensed Approved Authorised Treatment Facility (AATF) for the acceptance and processing of WEEE waste.
